- Brownton Public Library, 335 Third St. S., summer reading program will meet 10 a.m. for children 5 years old up to those entering second grade, followed by a 10:30 a.m. program for children entering third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades. It meets Wednesdays June 5, June 12, Thursday, June 20 (libraries are closed Wednesday, June 19, so for this week activities are taking place on Thursday), Wednesdays June 26, July 3 and July 10. Shelby Foote was a Civil War historian. Foote, a southerner who was featured in several docu mentaries, once told an interesting story about the start of the war. In his classic southern drawl, Foote explained that a Virginia newspaperman stated that the war would be over so fast, and that there would be so little violence that the blood of the first major battle could be cleaned up with a handkerchief. With a chuckle, the old historian mused at just how many handkerchiefs it would have taken to soak up the mess from the estimated 750,000 casualties suffered in what was, and still is, America’s bloodiest war.
With the school year winding down, it’s time to start thinking about things to do during the months ahead. One of the best is the summer reading program offered at the Hutchinson Public Library.

Sam Flom can’t quite remember why he dropped out of high school so many years ago. The Hutchinson resident does recall, however, that his mother was always mad at him for doing so.
The following incidents were reported by Hutchinson Police Services. MAY 16: Hutchinson Police responded to a two-vehicle accident at Roberts Road Southwest and Alan Street Southwest.
Louis Bedard, an autism spectrum disorder teacher at Park Elementary in Hutchinson, was named KS95 Teacher of the Week in March. He, as well as other honorees, were feted at the KS95 Teacher of the Week Dinner May 16 at the Radisson Blu at the Mall of America. In honor of his recognition, Bedard received a plaque, as well as one to display at Park Elementary.
