Camping with a legend

What could bring a large group of kids inside on a beautiful fall day? The chance to learn basketball skills from one of the greats in Minnesota — and Hutchinson — basketball history turned out to be a pretty good enticement. Hutchinson Youth Basketball Association kicked off its fall training sessions with a camp featuring Lindsay Whalen this past weekend at Hutchinson High School.

has a curiously shaped apple tree on his place, which is now in bloom, after having borne fruit this season for the first time. The tree is now full of blossoms as it was in the spring. Mr. Birkebek says he expects to gather the second crop at Christmas time.

POLICE BEAT

Hutchinson Police Services responded to the following incidents: Sept. 12: Hutchinson Police responded to an assist call in the Hutchinson Police Department lobby where the reporting adult male had active warrants. The male fled from officers westbound on First Avenue Northeast but was detained by officers near the intersection of First Avenue Northeast and Main Street North. Preston Arvid Root, 19, of Hutchinson was taken into custody for his two probation violation warrants on original charges of two counts misdemeanor-underage consumption out of McLeod County. Root was transported to the McLeod County Jail. He has been formally charged with misdemeanor- fleeing a peace officer by a means other than a motor vehicle and misdemeanor-obstruct legal process-interfere with peace officer in relation to this interaction.

Ever wonder how long it would take to drive about 30 mph from the Canadian border to New Orleans? The answer is about 30 days and it’s happening during October when the Military Vehicle Preservation Association, in cooperation with the Jefferson Highway Association, convoys the Jefferson Highway, a 2,500-mile stretch of road that dates to the 1920s. More than 30 privately owned vehicles are expected to participate.

By day, Mark Schmidt works as a manufacturing engineer at IRD Glass in Litchfield. Afterhours and onweekends,Schmidt fabricates light-colored toy logs at his rural Darwin shop that can create all kinds of structures — including one of record-breaking proportions.
