The tradition of planting trees in honor of retiring staff continues at Hutchinson Middle School. This year’s tree was planted in honor of Dawn Altermatt’s retirement. Altermatt taught physical education. She began teaching at the middle school in 1994.

A four-year process will soon culminate in the Winsted Arts Council’s installation of its first public mural. Artists Emily Victory of Watertown and Niko Alexander, formerly of Winsted, designed and painted the mural with suggestions and guidance from the art council’s mural subcommittee. The design incorporates an aerial view of the town circa the late 1800s. Greater Minnesota Sign and Graphics will hang the 10-foot by 20-foot mural on the south side of the Corner Bar building June 11. The arts council sees the mural as serving as a cultural centerpiece for downtown Winsted and as a gateway to its lake park.
As the summer begins to get into full swing, warmer and more humid days are on the horizon, say climate and weather scientists. Temperatures across Minnesota this summer have a 30% to 40% chance of being higher than normal, according to a seasonal outlook issued by the National Weather Service earlier this month.
