Dean Edward Bemis was born on November 18, 1939, at home in Minnesota. He was the son of Glen and Viola (Thompson) Bemis. Dean was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in his faith as a youth at First Lutheran Church in Cosmos. He received his education in Hutchinson and later transferred to Cosmos High School where he graduated with the class of 1957.
In December of 1959, Dean was united in marriage to Patrica Yager at First Lutheran Church in Cosmos. This marriage was blessed with three daughters, Lorie, Wendy and Kristy. Dean and Patricia resided in Cosmos and Hutchinson. They shared 18 years of marriage until Patricia passed away June of 1978.
Dean was a dairy farmer north of Hutchinson and a skilled carpenter in the area, working on many commercial buildings. He continued to do small projects in his retirement years.
Dean enjoyed traveling, woodworking, and doing glasswork. He also enjoyed taking trips to the casino, Friday night get togethers, playing cards, and gardening. Dean was proud to enter his flowers at the McLeod County Fair every year. He loved going to various car races and tractor pulls. Dean especially cherished time spent with his family and friends. His three daughters were his world, they were very important in his life. For 24 years, Dean traveled to Arizona for the winter. He quickly became known as the “handy man” in their Arizona community.
