GERALDINE BEREZNI

Geraldine “Geri” Berezni of Hutchinson, Pequot Lakes and most recently Waite Park passed away on Monday, August 25, 2025, in the loving presence of her husband, children and Fr. Eb Schefers at Quiet Oaks Hospice House, St. Augusta. She quietly took her last breath while Father was finishing family prayers.
Funeral services will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Private burial will take place at a later date at Camp Ripley in Fort Ripley.
Geri was born on April 15, 1937, to John and Cecelia Riewer in Bagley. Cecelia passed away in 1946 at age 37; John passed away in 1954 at age 51. Following Cecelia’s death, Geri’s aunt Theresa Thul took on the role as mother figure to keep the family together and help raise the six Riewer children in Bagley (Leroy, twins Geraldine and Gerald, Eileen, Rose and Peter) – for which our extended family is forever grateful.
Sy Berezni, a new teacher in Bagley, danced his way into Geri’s heart. Their first date was on Valentine’s Day in 1957; they were married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bagley on August 16, 1958. They recently celebrated 67 years of marriage. Together they especially enjoyed dancing, time with family, practicing their faith, traveling, Skipbo/cards, puzzles, and casino adventures.
Their five children, Michael, Eileen, David, Teresa and Diane were all born at Bagley Hospital. In 1968 the Berezni family moved to Hutchinson. They lived in Hutchinson until retiring to their lake home in Pequot Lakes in 1986 and finally moved to Waite Park in 2022.
Over the years Geri worked as a bank teller, daycare provider, Hutchinson Technology assembly, paraprofessional, and at Breezy Point Golf course – where she quickly learned the difference between tee time and tea time. However, her most esteemed roles were as wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma.
Geri instilled the virtue of hard work and ran a busy household with ease. She started the day ensuring beds were made and a hot breakfast was on the table; we ended the day with dinner as a family followed by popcorn. A “colorful” plate of food was important to her. She loved washing, ironing and folding clothes and embraced the challenge of stains. She worshipped the sun and did her due diligence to ensure nobody got unsightly tan lines – “Get those swimsuit straps down, girls!” She had an amazing memory for birthdays. As the “best mom” to Eileen, Geri was an advocate for inclusion before the term was coined.
In the final phase of Geri’s life, she enjoyed being outside for walks around their neighborhood, the beauty of Munsinger Garden, visits/meals with family and friends, daily trips to Costco, drives to the shed property in Pequot Lakes, and even a few final casino adventures!
She is preceded in death by her parents John and Cecelia Riewer, aunt and caregiver “Grandma” Theresa Thul, siblings Eileen Riewer Lewis, her twin Gerald Riewer, Peter Riewer, brother-in-law Al Colligan, nephew Jeff Riewer, great nephew Samuel Riewer, father-in-law Frank Berezni, mother-in-law Mary Berezni, sisters-in-law Doloris Berezni and Bonnie Berezni and brother-in-law Bill Berezni.  She is survived by her husband Sy Berezni, children Mike (Lisa) Berezni, Clearwater, Lisa’s daughter Annalie Norlander (Maggie Johnson), Robbinsdale, Eileen Berezni, St. Cloud, David Berezni, Clearwater, Teresa Berezni, St. Cloud, and Diane Marvel (Chris), Fergus Falls, grandchildren and urn bearers: Emily (Chris Onken) Berezni, Elk River, Alyssa (Alex) Keller, Chaska, Eric Marvel, Moorhead, Abby (Evan) Moore, West Fargo, N.D., Jacob Marvel, West Fargo, and great-grandchild Myerly Berezni.
