Joy Betty Schooler, 83, Hutchinson, formerly of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, August 23, 2025, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
Joy Schooler was born May 4, 1942, in Windom to Orville and Adona (Baird) Van Normman. She is a 1960 graduate of Swanville High School. Following graduation, she moved to the Twin Cities where she worked for Happy’s Potato Chip Co. and for Honeywell. Joy was united in marriage to Richard Schooler July 2, 1966, in Detroit Lakes. They made their home in Crystal prior to moving to Champlin where they started a family of their own adopting their older son, Kevin, in 1971. In 1974, they returned to Detroit Lakes and expanded their family adopting their younger son, Jason, in 1976. After her sons were in school, Joy worked for Detroit Lakes School District, Swift and Company and for United Methodist Church, retiring in 2008. They moved to Hutchinson in 2009. Richard died in 2012.
Joy enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, reading, fishing, and listening to music.
She is survived by her two sons: Kevin (Ann) of Plymouth and Jason (Tiffany Doherty) of Duluth, four grandchildren: Jackson, Jorja, William and Wesley, a sister: Shirley Markkula of Wadena; three brothers: Dale (Deb) of Browerville, Larry of Swanville, and Bruce of Browerville, as well as over 30 nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, Richard, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald, and a sister Jean Mathis
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2025, at United Methodist Church in Detroit Lakes, Reverend Leslie Zeek, officiating. Interment will be in United Methodist Memorial Garden. There will be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. David-Donehower Funeral Home is serving the family.
