Janice Jane Moritz was born on June 21, 1939 to Otto and Hilda (Schultz) Wagner on the family farm in rural Brownton, the older of two children. Jan was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Fernando. In 1957, she graduated from Brownton High School. On October 5, 1958 she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Dale Moritz, and they were blessed with three children and seven grandchildren. Being a mother and grandmother filled her life with immense joy and she loved her family unconditionally; always involved in their lives and taking every opportunity to spend extra time with them during holidays or supporting them in their various activities. Together, Jan and Dale made countless memories traveling to see friends and family on lakes, driving to see fall colors in northern Minnesota, and enjoyed time camping and fishing along the way. They also traveled extensively throughout the country and spent 16 winters in Mesa, Arizona together, with Jan continuing for another two years after Dale passed. In March, Jan was able to make her much anticipated annual visit to Laughlin, Nevada with her beloved cousins from Apache Junction, Arizona.
Jan was a dedicated farm wife and “right-hand” woman to Dale, always lending a hand where it was needed Whether it was delivering meals to the field, driving machinery, or hauling grain to town, she did it all without complaint. Jan and Dale tended large flower and vegetable gardens, and she took pride in preserving their bounty – making applesauce, freezing sweet corn, and preparing food to share with family. Jan completed many ceramic projects with friends, took time to admire her beautiful flowers, watch and feed the birds, read and put puzzles together.
For over 20 years, Jan worked in the activities department at the Buffalo Lake Nursing Home, sharing her caring and compassionate heart with the residents there. Jan looked forward to her complimentary room at Mystic Lake and Friday night dinners at Oakdale Country Club. After Dale passed away, Jan was welcomed with open arms to the Lakeridge Community in Hutchinson where she reconnected with old friends and made many new friends who brought her happiness. She was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake for over 60 years. She also served as the church secretary and was part of the same women’s circle for decades. Even after Jan moved to Hutchinson, she continued to be involved with church. Through her strong faith, selfless personality, and kind heart, her legacy will live on in those she loved most.
Jan is survived by her children: Kimberly Harris (Mike Doody) of Burnsville, MN, Michelle (Mike) Richards of Chippewa Falls, WI, and Scott (Barb) Moritz of Eagan, MN; her grandchildren: Kelsey Harris, Jenna Harris (Ryan Yackel), Allison Richards (Brian Rhodes-Devey), Lauren Richards, Nicholas Richards, Zach Moritz, and Colin Moritz; her brother and sister-in-law, Wayne Wagner and Laura Wagner; her special family friends, Mark and Lisa Taylor and their children, Nick and Alex; and many other relatives and friends. Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Dale in 2023; her parents, Otto and Hilda Wagner; and her parents-in-law, Ervan and Henrietta Moritz.
Blessed Be Her Memory
