These past several weeks, the Trump Administration has launched a full-fledged assault on AmeriCorps programs. AmeriCorps is a national service program that trains and deploys thousands of members across the U.S. every year to teach and mentor children, build and maintain trails, assist community nonprofits and render aid to communities impacted by disaster, among many other projects. It is often described as a domestic version of the Peace Corps. Since 1993, more than 1.3 million people have served in AmeriCorps, including many leaders in the education, disaster response and conservation fields.
